The Festival of Lughnasa by Máire MacNeill (7 Dec 1904 – 15 May 1987) was a very unique woman. Trained in folklore methods at Uppsala University, Sweden she then returned home and started research on the 195 sites associated with the Lughnasadh festival in Ireland. In this study she found Crom and Patrick and Lugh and the way the people of the land continued to honour Crom by continuing the ancient festival tradition at the ancient gathering places.
Many people who have definite ideas about what went on at Lughnasa will realise that they are suffering with romantic delusions from their speculations if they read and study this book. Folklore facts of actual gathering places, associated activities and the core theme of Patrick’s effort to replace Lugh who in turn tried to replace Crom allows readers to see through the smoke and mirrors, the misdirection and the false histories. Crom is the god of fertility and the harvest from the oldest known times in Ireland.
