Guidance for Celtic Pagan Pilgrimage to Tara.
1. The Public Car / Bus Park - open 24/7 with lighting, not suitable for campervans. 2. Car Park only, private ground, walls restored by local community. 3. Tara Hall (Michael Maguire) great for books and gifts, very nice cafe and free toilets. 4. Secondhand Book Shop (Michael Slavin) shed built with stones from an old church on the hill. 5. Hill Of Tara Open Studio (Courtney Davis) craft and spirituality 6. The Steel Stile, these days its well hidden in the hedge and rusting away slowly. 7. The Well of the Dark Eye, restored by local community. AKA - the Well of the White Cow, Caprach Cormac, Liagh, Tipra bo finne, Deare dubhe and Poll tocair na tuiliche. (Do not drink) 8. Entrance Gate and Display Boards. (the layout of these info boards confuses North and South) 9. St Patrick’s Statue, dressed as a 18th Century Bishop... 10 steps NE = original location of Croppies Stone 1824 (often mistakenly called the Lia Fail) 10. De-consecrated church / Interpretative Centre, grave yard, 2 standings stones, Sheela na Gig |
11. Raith na Senadh, one of Ireland’s three multi ring ceremonial enclosures (Tlachtga, Rathra) this is where the English Masons dug for the Ark of the Covenant 1900’s. Surrounded by a giant henge (not-visible)
12. Undecorated Celtic Cross with iron railings. 13. Huge Enclosure - Raith na Rig - Ritual Site in the Late Bronze Age to an Iron Age defensive structure - only partly visible today. 14. Mound of the Hostages - Duma na nGiall. A passage cairn with decorated stone aligned to Imbolg and Samhain Sunrises. Just 20 steps west was the site of another cairn - Duma na Bo 15. Forradh, Royal / Judgement Seat includes - United Irishmen 1798 gravestone and the current location for the Croppies Stone (this round top standing stone is often mistakenly called the Lia Fail) 16. Teach Cormac, royal residence of the heroic king of Tara, Cormac mac Airt 17. Southern Enclosure - Raith Laoghaire where the last Pagan King of Tara was buried standing up facing his enemies in Leinster. 18. A dried up well known as Laegh, a name signifying 'calf’. This is a lovely quiet spot that gets the midday and afternoon Sunshine... 19. Fairy Tree, an old lone thorn tree, please do not decorate this special tree with anything, just sit beside it and dream for a while... |
20. SW Barrow - Fothach Rath Grainne aka - the Sloping Trenches
21. NW Barrow - Rath Grainne - aka the Sloping Trenches - here you can touch the top of ancient Oak Trees and then walk down the slope to sit by the base of these magnificent ancestors.
22. Rath Caelchon Barrow - Munster chief named Caelchon was buried here having died at Tara during the reign of Cormac mac Airt - just slightly north west 30 paces or so was Tobar Finn, Finn’s Well...see blue dots for 3 of Tara’s Wells.
23. Processional Cursus (Banqueting Hall) aka Tech Midchúarta, a mead drinking hall... It is the sacred processional entrance way to the top of the hill. When you enter the gate to the Hill itself follow the hedge on your right (ie North) and you’ll come to the start of the sacred way...
24. Gravel Patch - continuous Full Moon Ceremonies have been held here by the Celtic Drui of the Celtic Druid Temple since the Spring Equinox 2003. The gravel was installed to facilitate easy access for ambulances, farm and ranger vehicles, today we use it as a location for our sacred fire ceremonies - we use a portable fire box leaving no trace. Celtic New Year Pilgrimage Samhain at Tlachtga
Samhain means Summer's End and is more than a single night... a night of three fires for Druí and invitation list only. There will be an open ceremony on Tara, the second fire of the night and all are welcome to join us - bring a candle lantern to take home a new fire spirit.
