1. Your Sacred Pilgrimage to the Realm of Sea
In Old Pagan times, each Celtic Druid experienced the world as the Realms of Sky, Land and Sea. Sacred Pilgrimage to the Realms is a path of self discovery for the Celtic Druid in our modern times. In this Sli an Drui Journal we share some of the wisdom gained from our knowledge and experience of walking the Celtic Path. Each of us can and should have a totally unique and personal experience from pilgrimage – to be more completely you because of your spiritual growth that is based on you and your choices. We hope to inspire the ‘right mindset’ for this pathwork as we guide you to know, enjoy and express the Sacred Knowledge and Indigenous Spiritual Traditions of a distinctly Celtic Druid Path.
We can all go to the sea side, travel on boats and look at great oceans from a high place and when we do this seeking connection with spirit of place for and with our higher self – this is called Pilgrimage to the Realm of Sea. I suggest this is not done solely on the internet because of its obvious limits but at the same time I write of it for the online Sli an Drui Journal to hopefully encourage readers to find the seeds of desire within and to then seek the fruits outside. This is called sacred pilgrimage – it’s not so much where you go to but how you get there and how you evolve on your way…
Now every act can be called sacred but this is not the usual starting place for most of us. Maybe this idea is better understood when we think that ‘making every act sacred’ is a wonderful way of being that we can all make another step towards. Making a pilgrimage begins with a decision to take that first step. This decision is made from a place within us that has no fear, but ‘fear’ may come later when we think or project excessively or if we allow others (especially those who have not done pilgrimage) to put the idea down or even to simply have influence on our decision.
The point of decision can often be re-cognised as ‘a knowing’ or a sudden awareness that this is what must be done. The decision can also be made with careful and deliberate preparations and forethought so that we may travel at our own calculated speed. Each of us can and should have a totally unique and personal experience from taking that first step and this is perhaps the best reason to begin to take pilgrimage – to be more completely you because of your spiritual growth that is based on you and your choices. This type of spiritual growth is not available in religion because in religion you are told to follow someone else’s path. Spiritual Pilgrimage is walking a spiritual path to your higher self and there is a unique and personalized custom made spiritual path for each of us.
In medieval times, Pilgrims placed a sea shell on their cloak or hat to let others know their intention. When a stranger entered a village – he or she would be seen and wondered about and the badge of the Pilgrim was quickly seen and usually accepted. Declaring your pilgrimage to a place or school or teacher was not uncommon. Today it is the digital camera and back pack that declares to the villagers that you are on a pilgrimage, even though today it is called tourism, it is the most common expression of pilgrimage today for many people. Yet even these tourists secretly seek out or hope to connect with the sacred because of an inner hunger. Their pilgrimage may be 5 star hotels and taxis and nice wine with dinner but hidden inside their organized holiday they are still hoping for that special experience.
When we decide to get focused and deliberately begin a pilgrimage to a sacred place we are actually deciding to contact and express our higher selves and the journey is as important as the destination. This distinction is of great importance because it helps to keep you connected to the highest expression of you all along your Path and not just at the destination or end of the journey.
The Three Realms meet at the seaside because it is here that the sky, land and sea all touch. It is here that conscious connection with the Realm of Sea can bring great healing and cleansing of spirit as it is a dynamic interface where energy is moving faster between dimensions. Many Holy Wells have great histories of healing the afflicted of physical ailments but they can also help with awakening connection to the higher self. The next best place for the Three Realms meeting is by a river flowing into a lake. A calm slow moving lake has only dull energy and is much lower in order of preference. Avoid canals. A fast flowing river is good too once you can actually be in the water. The simplest place for the meeting of the Three Realms is outside in the rain and most can get to this place without having to travel too far. But because salty sea water has the highest absorption and therefore refreshing and cleansing are strongest; the seaside is best.
Rain
So let’s start by going outside in the rain. You may sing if you want to – pick your song first and choose one that makes you dance and smile and move… But first, before you go out in the rain, watch yourself and see how you feel, how your life energy is so that afterwards you can look at the shift in how you feel and in how you ‘are’. Don’t think about it too much, tell your thinking mind that it is ok to just ‘be’ and you have begun to take that step towards inner freedom to gain unique wisdom.
Wear boots and carry an umbrella if you need to, or simply shorts, a top and sandals and go barefoot if you can, jump in puddles and make splashes. Then, when it is time; return indoors and watch yourself and how you feel. Another way is to just be about your business of the day and when it rains to just simply turn your face to the rain and accept it as a blessing.
I reckon you can see by now that this connecting to the Realm of Sea is not something you simply do once – it is instead a way of constant connection in many ways and times and places.
But, a warning – don’t put your face into the rain in areas of heavy or toxic air pollution because as the rain washes the air it collects all atmospheric dirt and we do not want that on our skin. After a few minutes of rain the air has been cleaned and the second part of the rainfall can be harvested or simply enjoyed on the skin/hair. Simple rainwater harvesting set-ups divert the first few minutes of rain fall away from storage containers to take the better quality for use by humans and animals. Don’t drink much rainwater as it has low levels of life force and it will ‘steal’ your lifeforce and nutrients etc.
Rivers
Sitting by a river that rushes by with all its noise and slash and wild dance can be very soothing to the heart and mind. Get a safe place where you can make actual contact with the flowing water. Dip your feet in and feel the cold and as you do this let the flowing energy drain any harmful energy or thoughts away from you. Have your words of release prepared beforehand. Set your mind that this is your intention and afterwards carefully dry your feet or hands and feel the warmth return. While doing this simple cleanse try to not think about anything in particular.
Maybe the river you can get to is too fast or too awkward to actually make contact with – so instead you look and listen and feel the air change as the freshness makes contact with you. Maybe the river is too cold etc but if you can focus your intention to the notion that the flowing energy is stronger than yours (especially as you are still) then you can release to it without contact. As you do this keep in mind that this river connects to the sea and has also been rainfall and maybe a holy well and above all that it never really stops moving... Rivers can be dangerous too – so have caution and be respectful and apply common sense when doing this pilgrimage.
Holy Wells
A well known place of pilgrimage (excuse the pun) since time began for many good reasons. In ancient times in Ireland most holy wells had their healing characteristic embedded in their names. An example is the modern name of a holy well ‘Tobernalt’ that comes form the Irish Tobar na nGealt which translates as the "Well of the Insane", but today the locals just call it the holy well. Clearly it had properties that helped those suffering with mental disturbances. Other wells were good for the hair, the eyes and the skin and so on.
With the arrival of the catholic church most of these holy wells got renamed as the well of Mary or the well of Patrick and so on and through this trick all the healing characteristics were now associated with a person instead of the well water itself. Many pilgrims to holy wells sought a ‘cure’ for their physical ailment. They would wash the sick or diseased body part with cloth dipped in holy water. After the washing they would leave the cloth tied to a tree – this had two functions. First it was a warning to others that the sick were dipping cloth into the well and washing sickness and probably dipping this contaminated cloth back into the well 2 or 3 times... i.e. a warning to others not to drink here. Secondly, the cloth would rot and as it did their illness would fade. Many people today use synthetic cloth and tie this to trees after washing but such cloth can take a long time to rot so the cure make also take a long time too.
Other holy wells may have a cup on a chain declaring ‘drink here’ to pilgrims. Many holy wells are decorated, turned in to religious shrines etc but it is wise to avoid these places of religion when they are busy with ‘sinners’ for obvious reasons. The source of rivers is another type of holy well that many ignore. Some rivers spring from the ground on hillsides or even on mountain tops. Quality water will be 4* and alkaline and this can be checked by taste – ie soft smooth etc or by use of a pH tester kit from garden centres.
If you can find yourself at the source of a river high on a hill with a view over the land and the sky above you or at known holy well – then you have a place where the 3 realms meet. You wont be the first person to find this special place but if you have chosen your timing and location carefully and are comfortable that bus loads of tourists are not about to appear then you can do the magic of self transformation being described here. Getting to a river’s source or to a holy well where you have time and inner peace is the objective. Touch, wash in (and drink the water if you are confident that its not polluted) and imagine it is a kind of static wipe that removes harmful energetic imprints while at the same time its Light is available to replenish and refresh your Light. If you are really on a Sacred Pilgrimage you’ll have a clean glass bottle and cap to take some of the magic of holy water away with you.
Don’t drink dirty water, check for signs of pollution and life around the well head etc. If you find dirt or rubbish there, then you should clean up using the bag you always carry when on visits to holy places. This self transformation requires you to drink enough healthy living water to clean inside the body in support of the etheric cleanse. This is a special part of the Path too.
Seaside
Plan your visit to the seaside. Above all; choose safety and cleanliness of place and pick the time so that the sea is coming in if you want to fill up on Light. If you choose to be letting go of things that no longer serve you then maybe it will have more effect or benefit for you if you choose the outgoing tide that leaves the high water mark as it retreats from land and from you. It is a good idea to have a friend with you as a support and a back up if you get into any difficulties and to look after your kit so you can relax your brain (and not think about your clothes, bag etc) as you go into the sea.
First, fill up your energy field with the incoming tide washing over you. This is my recommendation because as a Lightworker you need to shine brightly and when we are glowing; the letting go of memories, fears, trauma, that which no longer serves etc, can much more effective. Each time we lose ‘stuff’ we make room for the new and here we should exercise patience and caution – choose wisely.
So you are at the seaside and the tide is going out, maybe you are not the only person on the beach but it does not matter. It’s warm enough to be standing on the sand / rocks and to have the sea water on your legs or feet. If possible you are up to your depth facing away from the shore so that as the tide retreats you will emerge above the water line washed and refreshed. Remember you may do this many times so it’s a thing you can practice and enjoy more each time so there’s no need for an instantaneous total transformation – but be aware that this may happen too....
You will have organized your words to say in a way so you can recall them completely without having to read them. You will have accompanying visuals or images inside your head so you can be clear about the issue/s. It is ok if you feel a bit scared or silly or if you think this whole thing is stupid or crazy. Simply let these feelings and thinkings bubble up and then pay no attention to them because after you avoid connecting with them, they will simply dissolve. Now is your moment – the time of perfect presence. Let tears flow and move it all with your spoken words and intention and breath. Don’t over do it, smile, give thanks and walk back to shore.
The sea is the great mother and she absorbs everything unconditionally. Technically – the high salt content neutralizes while perpetual motion transforms and this is how Nature creates the life force we refer to as Light.
Holistic Re-birth and shining brightly
Washing away things / feelings that no longer serve you and emerging as a new and refreshed you can be seen as a type of holistic re-birth you can do for yourself. You are in charge of how strong, how deep and how completely you grow, know and gain wisdom from your personal knowledge and experience on your own sacred pilgrimage. It can all be done gently and with a song in the heart, a smile on your face and positive intentions – it all works on the breath and the intention. You let ‘go’ on the out-breath, pull in new life force on the in-breath. Clarity of intention can be helped by strong focus and the words you speak define focus. Simply put – desire movement, know your words, find the place, breath out and let it go. The spoken word has higher potential than the silent word. Then breathe in new life for the new you. Do this holistically – ie move / bend from your ankles, knees, hips, waist, chest arms and head, firstly with both eyes open and then both lightly closed. A word of warning – do not overcharge – this means that you might become dizzy or lightheaded causing nausea or get a dry mouth or enter altered states of consciousness / awareness that may or may not be good for you as a beginner. This is because as more Light is now flowing through you and you need to ‘exercise’ with this to develop capacity.
We develop our capacity for inner calm / shining brightly by such pilgrimage, by meditating, by Yoga, Tai Chi, Breathwork and by combining the Celtic Druids Cross of Light and the Blessing to the Three Realms with the Filling of the Three Cauldrons as taught here at Druidschool. Our public ceremonies here and at Tara on the Full Moon and on the Eightfold Sun Year begin with these 3 practices and everyone is welcome to join us for these free and open activities. We are always happy to meet students / seekers / pathworkers at ceremonial gatherings – everyone’s Light in group synergy with ceremonial intention has a resonance for more than the group itself. This is known as service. Our Sli an Drui Online Course teaches the Celtic Druids Cross of Light and the Blessing to the Three Realms with a series of pictures with the words as Gaeilge (in Irish) supported by phonetics telling you how it should sound and an English translation.
Earthing Overcharge
We all need to know how to not overcharge – just like we all know that too much alcohol gives hangovers… Releasing overcharge from energy work can be a simple as: barefoot on the earth, touching hands to the earth, breathing with intention, showering and cold showering, washing face, hands and hair, drinking 5 pints of living water / day (average size person) and simple laying down on the ground and sleeping. Pay attention to safety and have a trusted friend stand guard or hold the space, but above all enjoy. If you can or if you want to – you should keep a written record of each event. Sign and date each event and keep them all private.
They are your steps on Your Path. Later on you may share some of your early experiences being careful not to tell anyone which place is best or what time is best and so on because we are all individuals and in this way we can all make our own special connection to the Source as we visit the Realm of Sea.

2.Your Sacred Pilgrimage to the Realm of Land.
We are of this land, the merging of sky and sea. The electrism from the sky and the magnetism from within the land create the zone for us humans to be healthy. There is constant flux between the electrism and magnetism and we refer to this as the dance. We always encourage Pathworkers to ‘enjoy every step of the dance’ because it is a wonderful experience when we are awake to it.
There are many places where the 3 realms meet and the opportunity to connect with this dynamic frontier exists for ever but we have to go to it with open minds, hearts and souls to really feel it and integrate it into our framework of understanding the Universe. The highest expression of the Realm of Land is of course the mountain. Some are known as sacred but they all are sacred if we acknowledge the power of place as part of our spiritual evolution to self awareness.

You gotta climb a mountain! Any mountain, but you may have to begin with a local hill and build up to the lofty heights of serious mountains. By this I mean a real hill or mountain, not a metaphorical challenge as hill / mountain but an actual high place with the panoramic view that only comes from being of top of the hill. Choose your challenge wisely, seek and take advice make sure you’ve got the kit – sturdy boots, waterproofs and water, bring plenty of water. Start off with easy and build up to a serious challenge if you can.
You can take a few basic steps to get to the base of the mountain – ie you can get a special rock. There’s an essay in this edition of the Journal that shares understandings about the magic in a rock. A Quartz rock would be my first choice but any rock that takes your fancy is good. Don’t buy a rock, most shop quartz’s are exploded from the earth and are in shock, many of these are also machine polished to better sell for higher prices… Allow yourself the experience of meeting a rock in the wild. Yeah, I know that sounds a bit stupid but when it happens for you you’ll know what it means. I’ll try and describe it as be open to getting a rock, having desire for a rock and even encourage you to make a space for a rock in your alter / temple / private space. No it may well be that you already have rocks. Take the time to look at and listen to each rock in your collection. This means stilling your thinking mind and letting ‘stuff’ from the rock in. Remember its story and the people involved, where and when you got it and so on and thank the rock for holding that info. Now having done that - you’ll be more awake for the next rock that comes into your life.
The rocks don’t have to be big. They just have to be special in the sense that you make connection with them. You can benefit by washing any rock clean of its ‘stuff’ by placing it under a rainwater downpipe during the rains. You can then speak to the rock and ask it to store your hopes and plans. Later on you can happily give the rock away – as it has no power unless you imagine it to be so.
You must plant things in the Earth. It’s easy – simply begin by getting a grow bag / window box and add the plants available in your nearest garden center and add water and give your blessing – Love and Gratitude or Grá agus Buiochas. Harvest wild tree seeds this autumn and plant them everywhere you can on your adventures. Walk barefoot on the ancient temples and let your feet be your divining tool. Sit in the shade of a tree on a sunny day and listen to Nature.
Adopt a tree. Find a tree that’s mature and harvest some of its seed this fall. Plant these seeds in a mix of compost and leaf mold you gathered from the parent tree as this contains the best mix of flora and fauna for that seed. Never water it from above, instead sit your pot in a dish and water the dish because this way the tree will take what it needs and you’ll avoid creating a fungal layer on the top of the earth in the pot. Start it in a 2 gallon pot so it has room to grow. Don’t feed it with chemicals. Don’t let it dry out. Talk to it kindly. Maybe even give it a special rock. Keep this baby tree in a sheltered place and if you can please give it some friends to wave in the air with. Plan to give it away or to plant it in the wild or at a friends place. Encourage others to do likewise especially children. This is your journey / pilgrimage to the Realm of Land.
You can take a few basic steps to get to the base of the mountain – ie you can get a special rock. 3. Your Sacred Pilgrimage to the Realm of Sky
We are all under the Realm of Sky. The electrism of life comes from the sky with over 100,000 Cosmic Rays passing through your body every hour. As rain falls it carries an energy we call electrism, not the vulgar energy from electrical outlets but there are some similarities. Victor Schauberger coined the term ‘electrism’ to differentiate it from the 220volt we know today.
Thunder is the best known version of Sky Electrism and the pic below from the internet says it all!.

For us - all energies from outside our planet are described as ‘electricism’ and the energies from within the earth are called ‘magnetism’. There is constant flux between the sky electrism and earth magnetism and we refer to this as the dance.
First we acknowledge the blue sky and the various cloud shapes and styles. Most days we can look at clouds during the day and learn which cloud types bring rain and which do not. It is not important to know the Latin names of clouds but a visit to a library to study the types can be very useful. We look to the Moon in its 28 day cycle noting where on the horizon the Moon will rise. Plan to get into place before Moonrise and see the enlarged Moon reduce in size as it climbs. The enlarged Moon at rising time is due to magnification by the earth’s atmosphere and the angle of shine. See the enlarged Sun as it sets in the pic below

We watch where the Sun rises and over a year we can see the place on the horizon where the winter and summer set. Automatically we will see the mid-point of the two equinoxes sunrise. This can be extended to include the 4 cross quarter days of Imbolg, Beltine, Lughnasa agus Samhain. This is during daylight and is a big part of knowing where we are on this planet. The above Sun watch needs to be done from the same place and when done with a shadow caster / gnome we can map a year and time clock onto the shadows. With a shadow caster or gnome you can find true north by observing the shadow of the midday sun (30* to 60* above the horizon) at its highest. This is how our Ancestors got the measure of where they were in time and space and we can do the same at home and then with this knowledge we can do it at any sacred site.
At night the highest expression of the Realm of Sky is of course the Stars. You got to look to the Stars! Any cloudless night will do – just start to look up. At the early stages there’s no need to know the names or mythology of the stars or their grouping – just look. Choose your nights to star gaze by checking every night and by always having your warm kit ready.
Encourage others to do likewise especially children. This is your journey / pilgrimage to the Realm of Sky.
