Tree Calendar

30/9/2013

We're regularly asked what tree calendar we follow. When we ask the person what they mean, they generally reference a book they have read. We like to share our understanding: Our ancestors in Ireland lived in a forest culture. This forest since the 1500's has been completely destroyed, there is no going back.
What ever tree calendar they worked with, is now, to us, in a sense irrelevant. The idea of a tree calendar and tree lore however is still very important. The spirit of the old forest is intrinsically linked with bacteria and fungi, these lie waiting underground to nourish, support and co-create with trees. What we need to do is get out there and restore our tree coverage. Only then will the true magic of the trees and the forest become apparent. Most of us won't see this time but we must still collect, plant, nourish and care for the seed of the new forest.

This is one of my seed collection areas. Above these up-cycled fish boxes is an Ash tree. It is full of seed and when the wind blows it covers our yard in seed. We regularly have saplings popping up all over the place. Some of these seeds will find a home in these boxes filled with earth.
