Celtic Druid Temple Forest Garden

Our Forest Garden Project in a Meme!
In total we have 16.5 acres of land, 9 acres will be planted this January. These 9 acres are part of a bigger permacultre forest garden project that we have dreamed of for many many years. You can be a part of this in many different ways, the pic explains it, I will however make a page here on this website for more info. The main even will be next summer solstice when we will have summer camp here centred around weeding these trees. No chemicals will be used so hard labour is the only solution! Much better and more enjoyable to do this as a large group and as part of a celelbration of our culture. So for volunteering your time and effort you will be much rewarded with good food, company, song, camp fire, dance and craic. We will even venture off the farm for a pilgrimage to Crom on the Solstice. Stay for a day, a weekend, a week or a fornight in our medival styled tent village.

Samhain fire

25/10/2013

It's a beautiful bright day here in Roscommon. I (Niamh) have a couple of days off work and am using the time to prepare for our Samhain festival. My main responsibility is the fire. I along with Ard Druí Red John create the first spark of the new year fire. It is a sacred fire and so I take the preparations very seriously. Today I am making the char cloth to start the fire with.

On the night I will make a spark with a striker, this catches on to the piece of pre charred cloth, it burns at an intense temperature, this will be added to a pile of dry herbs and thistle heads that I have been drying for months. This, once it catches into flames, is then added to the sacred fire box into a nest of kindling also prepared weeks ahead of time.

This process will only work if I get the charcloth right today and then keep it bone dry until Samhain.

Who is a Druid?

11/10/2013

What is a Druid? Who is a Druid? How Do I become a Druid? These questions can never be answered with words, especially printed words. People love definitions and labels. We try to categorize our world constantly, making assumptions and forming opinions by the second, so it helps when something can be easily explained. Spirituality and one's expression of this, is completely unique to the individual and as complex as you can get, well at least when you try to explain it! When you know, feel, live and love it, it becomes the simplest thing in the world.

When people want to become Druids they seek a clearly defined path, a set of guidelines and procedures. We live in an information age so it would be great if all this could be summed up nicely in a book, with pictures and symbols and step by step directions. I love books. The room I'm typing in is full of books, all sorts of books, religious, spiritual, philosophy, drama, DIY. The thing is, not one of those books can tell me how to express my spirituality. It would be like deciding you want to become an artist from reading a book. You might learn certain techniques, some hints or tips but you won't become an artist. You become an artist when you have found your own unique way of expressing your creativity.

Native Forest

We've had a great weekend here at Celtic Druid Temple. On Saturday we had a group learning the skills of divining for water and subtle energy and today we're just back from a forest shoot with our archery club. To top the weekend off we have been given the good news that our application to plant a native forest has been succesful-this means early next year we will have a team of people here planting a mixed broadleaf forest including the oak.

Hawthorn Harvest

It's that time of year again, the wind is blowing strong and the leaves are falling in all their glorious colours to the ground. We're on the brink of change. We've celebrated the equinox and we're heading into the dark cycle of the year. Right now, though, there is still plenty of green  and red. The berries are amazing, bursting with ripeness. I think it was five years ago when I was able to harvest blackberries. This year we have a super abundance.
I've been looking for recipes and ideas for what to do with this harvest. My shelf in the kitchen is ladened with fermentation experiments! I'm really taken with Hawthorn at the moment. It's an amazing tree. It is a medicine and tonic for the heart (google it!).

Here's a hawthorn berry heart tonic recipie: 2 cups of boiling water on 3 tablespoons of freshly picked berries, cover and let stand over night till noon the next day in a warm place, then strain. 1 cup taken with meals at least twice a day. Enjoy!
